MOUNTAINBIKE.COM reviews Pedro's Ice Wax Pedro's Ice Wax By Mark Riedy. Leave it to Pedro's, the company that came up with Syn lube, to create a product this strange. Pedro's sought to combine the storied lubricating properties of wax, which has always been a nightmare to apply, with the simplicity of a liquid lubricant. Ice Wax uses a two-layer system to lube and protect the chain. The bottom layer is silicone and ptfe (which sometimes goes by the trade name of Teflon) and the outer layer is the white, soft wax layer which protects the whole system. Ice Wax uses a sort of one-two punch to clean and lube the chain in one simple step. Let's say you have a dry but dirty chain on your bike and you've got a new tube of Ice Wax. Here's what you do: Apply a healthy dose of Ice Wax then watch as it hardens and bubbles up. This first step is where it gets all up in the chain and sucks up the dirt from the endless nooks and pockets. Then you wipe off the chain to clean the gunk that the Ice Wax has lifted from it. Then you apply a second coat of Ice Wax, give it a few minutes to sink in, then hit the trail. The first time I used Ice Wax I of course didn't read the directions and, as I would've with every other type of lube, slopped the white stuff all over my drivetrain. This didn't have an incredibly positive effect. The problem was that my chain and cogs were coated in white, flaky wax and I didn't know what the hell to do. Then I read the bottle, wiped the chain and cassette clean, and started over. Things were then just dandy. Size 85g Tube Pedro's Syn Grease by Mark Riedy I get the feeling that if Pedro's had the money they'd do an infomercial, just like the ones you see broadcast just before the F1 races on FoxSports. Ones where some guy--usually with a moustache and a curly mullet--pulls the drain plug on a ragin' V8 and lets it crank along at 8,000-rpm with no oil in it. What does that have to do with anything? Got me. So, Syn Grease, an 'ultra performance synthetic grease' according to the label. It's what I would call a medium-weight grease, one that would work well in just about every application from hubs and bottom brackets to lubing stems, seatposts and your average bolt. The most pronounced quality of Syn grease is the sticky feel, get some on your hands and if feels kinda tacky. While the Syn grease will work with the same screw-on type gun that works with WTB, Manitou and other types of grease, I really, really wish it came in a great big can. Like maybe 12-ounces with an application brush. In the past, I've always had bad luck with the guns clogging or the tubes blowing out from the pressure. One question remains in all this talk of sin and grease, who is that girl showin' off the Pedro's "high performance underwear" on their site? There will be a full investigation and perhaps and infomercial.
